The Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) aims to help you set carbon emission reduction targets in line with the latest climate science and the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Supply chain carbon emissions

Carbon emissions are attributed to different scopes and categories. Scope 1 and 2 cover emissions caused by your own operations, while scope 3 includes emissions attributed mostly to your supply chain. 

Scope 3 emissions typically account for 40 - 80% of total carbon emissions, often reaching over 90%. When reducing your environmental impacts by setting science-based targets (SBTs), you must look beyond scope 1 and 2 to your supply chain where the majority of your emissions sit.

How to achieve your targets:

SBTi near-term targets requires absolute reduction targets, supplier engagement targets or both that collectively cover at least 67% of total scope 3 emissions and these must align with pathways well below 2°C. 

The challenge of addressing scope 3 emissions, is that you must influence factors outside of your organisation's remit – your suppliers operating within your end-to-end supply chain.
